Commercial solar PV and battery storage for Kirklees, Calderdale, Bradford and Leeds

Commercial Solar Panels for West Yorkshire Manufacturers

West Yorkshire’s manufacturing runs through its valleys: textile and engineering firms in Huddersfield and the Colne Valley, chemicals and food in Kirklees and Calderdale, and printing, packaging and fabrication around Bradford and Leeds. Plenty are family businesses in buildings they own, which is exactly where solar decisions get made quickly. BrightEdge Solar designs and installs rooftop solar PV and battery storage for factories, mills and industrial units across West Yorkshire. We’re based in Beverley, East Yorkshire, and work on the same Northern Powergrid network across Yorkshire, including an 86 kWp industrial roof in Doncaster.

How a project runs
From first call to aftercare
Initial call and desktop design

Initial call: we look at your bills and, ideally, half-hourly data. Desktop design: satellite imagery and mapping give us an initial layout and estimate, often before we visit.

Site survey and proposal

Site survey: roof, structure, electrical supply, existing G99 approvals and access. Proposal: final design, expected generation, costs and timescale.

G99 application and installation

G99 application: we submit and track it, along with any planning application. Installation and commissioning: MCS-compliant, planned around your busy periods.

Monitoring and aftercare

Remote monitoring, plus optional annual maintenance to MCS MIS3002.

Stone mills and northlight sheds

We check the timber or steel structure, the roof covering and any listing or conservation-area controls. On pitched slate roofs, GSE in-roof systems sit flush in place of the roof covering. South-facing slopes on northlight sheds can often take panels, and we plan around the glazed north faces, valleys and gutters.

Valley-bottom sites and tight access

Hillsides, chimneys and neighbouring mills can shade a roof for part of the day. We model shading in the desktop design, and SolarEdge optimisers can limit the losses. Narrow yards and canal-side sites need careful scaffold and lifting plans, planned around deliveries and walkways.

Maintenance and remedial work

Including on systems installed by other firms: inspection, fixing and re-certifying non-compliant systems, and ongoing maintenance.

FAQ

Commonly Asked Questions

Yes. We cover Huddersfield, Halifax, Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield and the rest of West Yorkshire from our base in Beverley. We work on the same Northern Powergrid network across Yorkshire, including an 86 kWp industrial roof in Doncaster.

Northern Powergrid. We handle the G99 application with them, which typically adds 8–12 weeks before installation.

Often, yes. We check the structure, the roof covering and any listing or conservation-area controls. On pitched slate roofs, in-roof systems sit flush in place of the roof covering, and SolarEdge optimisers help where hillsides or chimneys shade part of the roof.

Yes. MID meters with remote reading record the generation, so the electricity can be billed fairly to each occupant. If you lease rather than own, you’ll need the landlord’s consent, and a PPA can suit leased buildings.

Typically about £17,000–£21,000 for 30 kWp, £28,000–£37,000 for 50 kWp and £50,000–£65,000 for 100 kWp, excluding VAT. Systems of 150 kWp and above are typically about £420–£650 per kWp. Book a free survey for an accurate quote.

A 50–150 kWp roof typically takes about 1–2 weeks on site, after G99 approval. You’ll only lose power briefly for the final connection, and we can schedule that out of hours.

Areas we cover in West Yorkshire

We work with businesses across:

  • Kirklees: Huddersfield, the Colne and Holme Valleys, Dewsbury, Batley, Mirfield, and Cleckheaton and the Spen Valley
  • Calderdale: Halifax, Brighouse, Elland, Sowerby Bridge and the upper Calder Valley
  • Bradford district: Bradford, Shipley, Bingley and Keighley
  • Leeds: the Aire Valley, Cross Green, Stourton, Garforth, Morley and Pudsey
  • Wakefield district: Wakefield, Normanton, Castleford and Ossett
  • Elsewhere in Yorkshire: see our pages for commercial solar in Hull and East Yorkshire, and we take on larger commercial projects across the UK

These are areas we cover, not a list of past installs. We also cover commercial solar in Sheffield and Rotherham.

What we install

  • Rooftop solar PV on profiled metal, composite, fibre-cement, slate, flat and pitched roofs. See commercial solar installers.
  • SolarEdge systems with optimisers for shaded or complex roofs, as well as Solis, Fox ESS and Sigenergy inverters.
  • Commercial battery storage for early shifts, evening loads or an export limit. See commercial battery storage.
  • MID metering with remote reading. Useful on multi-occupancy mills where solar has to be billed fairly between tenants.
  • Workplace and fleet EV charging fed by solar and storage.
  • Remedial work on existing systems: inspecting, fixing and re-certifying systems installed by other firms.

For roof types and the checks we make, see warehouse and industrial solar.

Grid connection (G99) in West Yorkshire

West Yorkshire is on Northern Powergrid’s Yorkshire network, the same network operator we deal with for our Hull, East Yorkshire and Doncaster work. Almost every commercial system needs G99 approval before installation. We prepare and submit the application with the technical details and single-line diagrams the DNO needs, and deal with any queries. Approval typically adds 8–12 weeks before installation, so we start it early.

Already have G99 approval for an older system? On our Doncaster project we sized the new SolarEdge inverter to fit an existing approval granted for an older 60 kW unit, and a SolarEdge ONE Commercial Controller handles G99/G100 export limitation. If the DNO limits your export, a battery means you still use everything you generate. Read more: G99 applications explained.

Planning in West Yorkshire

Many rooftop systems on commercial buildings fall under permitted development, subject to conditions and size limits. Local factors that can change this:

  • Saltaire World Heritage Site and its setting, in the Bradford district.
  • The Peak District National Park, which takes in part of Kirklees, and other protected land where extra conditions can apply.
  • Mill conservation areas and listed mills, which are common in the Calder, Colne and Holme valleys.

We’ll check for your site and apply if it’s needed.

Installing on a working site

  • Site inductions, RAMS and permits to suit your own health and safety rules.
  • Scaffolding and edge protection planned around loading bays, yards and walkways.
  • Temporary covers over rooflights during the install, and a permanent Man-Safe lifeline if you want one.
  • Only a brief shutdown for the final connection, which we can schedule out of hours.
  • A 50–150 kWp roof typically takes about 1–2 weeks on site, after G99 approval.

Typical costs

Indicative installed costs for commercial solar PV, by system size (ex VAT):

  • 30 kWp: about £17,000–£21,000
  • 50 kWp: about £28,000–£37,000
  • 100 kWp: about £50,000–£65,000
  • 150 kWp and above: about £420–£650 per kWp

Commercial battery storage typically costs about £350–£450 per kWh installed, including the hybrid inverter. As a real example, a 42 kWh battery with a 20 kW hybrid inverter added to an existing system came to about £16,000.

Prices exclude VAT, which is charged at 20% on commercial installs. Simple roofs with good access sit at the lower end. Fibre-cement roofs, premium panels, scaffolding and safety systems such as rooflight protection or Man-Safe lifelines push the price up. Every quote sets out equipment, installation, scaffolding and DNO costs separately, so you can compare like for like.

Paying for it

  • Outright purchase: the best long-term return for businesses with capital available. Solar panels and batteries may qualify for capital allowances, so ask your accountant.
  • Business finance or leasing: spreads the cost. See solar finance.
  • Power Purchase Agreement (PPA): little or no upfront cost. You buy the power generated on your roof at an agreed rate, which can suit leased buildings. See PPAs.
