Rooftop solar and battery storage for business parks, hotels and venues, and Nidderdale farms
Harrogate’s economy doesn’t run on giant sheds. It runs on offices and business parks, hotels, conference and event venues, independent shops, and the farms and food businesses of Nidderdale and the Vale of Mowbray. Many of these have steady daytime electricity demand and roofs that could be working harder. BrightEdge Solar designs and installs commercial solar panels and battery storage across Harrogate, Ripon, Knaresborough and the surrounding villages. We’re based in Beverley, about 57 miles away. Our nearest job is a new-build care home in Clifton, York, about 22 miles from Harrogate.
Harrogate’s business parks, including Hornbeam Park, Cardale Park and Nidderdale Park, are full of offices, labs and light industrial units with flat or low-pitched roofs. Air conditioning, IT and lighting make for a weekday demand curve that matches solar well. Thirkill Park at Pannal and St James Business Park in Knaresborough add newer industrial and trade units.
Flat roofs often can’t take drilled fixings, either because of the membrane warranty or the loading. A ballasted system sits on the roof under its own weight instead. At the care home in Clifton, York, we fitted 47.08 kWp on a membrane roof using a lightweight Van der Valk ballasted system, under 32 kg/m², with no roof strengthening. Our office and public sector solar page has more.
Hotels, spas, restaurants and event venues are big daytime users: kitchens, laundry, pools, cooling and lighting. They often have busy evenings too, which is where battery storage earns its place, moving surplus midday generation into the evening peak. Many of Harrogate’s hotels are in Victorian stone buildings in conservation areas, so we look first at rear roofs, flat roofs, outbuildings and car parks, and design layouts that can’t be seen from the street.
Ripon’s commercial growth is along the A1(M). Potter Space Ripon, at Melmerby near junction 50, is a large logistics and industrial park, with older industrial land around it. Further south, Flaxby, off junction 47, is allocated in the Harrogate district Local Plan as a major new employment site. Food processing, packaging and storage businesses here often run refrigeration around the clock, and that’s where on-site solar is worth the most. See warehouse and industrial solar.
From the dairy and livestock farms of Nidderdale to the arable land east of the A1(M), farm buildings make good solar roofs. At Little Habton, near Malton, we re-clad an agricultural store and fitted 24.64 kWp of panels with a Fox ESS battery, so the farm got a sound new roof and its own power in one project. Read more about farm solar panels and grants and funding for farm solar.
On awkward or exposed sites, we’ve also fitted 51.03 kWp of east-west panels on a low-ballast flat-roof system at Woodsmith Mine near Whitby.
For homes, see home solar panels and battery storage.
Large parts of central Harrogate, Ripon and Knaresborough are conservation areas, and there are many listed buildings. Rooftop solar on most commercial buildings is permitted development, subject to conditions, but listed buildings, and panels on some road-facing roofs in conservation areas, need permission. We check the planning position before we design, so you don’t pay for a layout you can’t build. Planning is handled by North Yorkshire Council.
Northern Powergrid runs the network across the Harrogate district. Depending on your postcode, you’ll be in its Northeast or Yorkshire licence area, and we check which one for you. Most commercial systems need G99 approval, which typically adds 8–12 weeks, and we manage the application. Read more about G99 applications.
The York and North Yorkshire business sustainability grants have closed. There’s no national grant for business solar, but capital allowances and the business rates exemption for on-site generation (England, to 31 March 2035) usually do more for your numbers anyway. Power Purchase Agreements suit businesses that would rather not pay upfront. See solar panel grants for businesses.

Yes. We cover Harrogate, Ripon, Knaresborough, Pateley Bridge, Boroughbridge, Wetherby and the villages around them. Our nearest job is in Clifton, York, about 22 miles from Harrogate.
Often, yes. A ballasted system is held down by weight rather than fixings. In York we fitted 47.08 kWp this way on a membrane roof, under 32 kg/m², with no roof strengthening.
Usually, with careful design. We look at rear and flat roofs, outbuildings and car parks first, and check whether planning permission is needed before we design.
It can be, because hotels and venues use a lot of power in the evening, after the solar has peaked. We model it from your half-hourly data before recommending one.
Northern Powergrid. Depending on the postcode, a site is in its Northeast or Yorkshire licence area. We check which, then submit and manage the G99 application.
