Hessle, Anlaby, Kirk Ella, Willerby and Cottingham sit just outside the city boundary, in the East Riding, and between them they have some of the area’s best roofs for solar: detached and semi-detached family homes, newer estates, village-centre slate and pantile roofs, sports clubs and the offices and units at Bridgehead by the Humber Bridge. BrightEdge Solar has installed in Hessle more than once, for a home and for Hessle Sporting Club, and on a home in West Hull nearby. We’re based in Beverley, 7 miles from Cottingham and 12 from Hessle.

Solar panels for homes in Hessle, Anlaby, Kirk Ella and Willerby

Most of the homes we survey here are owner-occupied, with family-sized roofs and someone at home for part of the day, which suits solar with a battery.

  • In-roof or on-roof. In-roof panels replace part of the tiles and sit flush with the roof line, as on our Hessle and West Hull jobs. On-roof panels sit on rails above the tiles and are the simpler, lower-cost option. We’ll show you both if your roof suits them.
  • Mixed roofs. Plenty of homes here have a pitched main roof and a flat-roofed extension or garage. The Hessle Powerwall job used both, so the system could be bigger than the main roof alone allowed.
  • Battery storage. A battery stores what you don’t use during the day for the evening. We size it from your actual usage rather than selling the biggest unit.
  • 0% VAT. Solar panels and batteries installed on a home carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.

Conservation areas and planning

Hessle Town, Hessle Southfield and Cottingham all have conservation areas, designated by East Riding of Yorkshire Council. Inside a conservation area, panels on a roof that faces a road may need planning permission, and listed buildings always need listed building consent. Elsewhere, most home systems are permitted development, subject to conditions. We check your address before we design, and we use all-black panels where appearance matters.

Clubs, community buildings and charities

Hessle Sporting Club funded its system through the Football Association, with payments released in stages as the work progressed. We worked to the funder’s schedule and provided the technical details and paperwork it needed. Sports clubs, church halls, village halls and community centres in the area can often use:

  • 0% VAT on solar for buildings used for a relevant charitable purpose, including village halls (until 31 March 2027)
  • Sport, community and charitable funders, depending on the organisation
  • Daytime and evening use: clubhouses busy in the evening often benefit from a battery

Businesses: Bridgehead, Melton and the A63

Bridgehead Business Park, beside the Humber Bridge in Hessle, has offices, R&D and light-industrial buildings. Further west along the A63, Melton West Business Park has larger industrial units. Offices and workshops mostly use power in the working day, so most solar output is used on site. Where you lease your unit, you’ll need the landlord’s consent, and a Power Purchase Agreement can work when neither party wants to fund the system upfront. For larger sites see commercial solar in East Yorkshire, or commercial solar in Hull inside the city.

Areas we cover

  • Hessle (HU13), including Hessle Foreshore and Bridgehead
  • Anlaby, Kirk Ella and West Ella (HU10)

These are areas we cover, not a list of past installs.

Grid connection

The whole area is on Northern Powergrid’s Yorkshire network.

  • Most home systems with an inverter up to 3.68 kW single-phase connect under G98: we install, then notify Northern Powergrid.
  • Larger home systems, many battery set-ups, and clubs and businesses need G99 approval first. That typically adds 8–12 weeks, and we handle the application.

See our G99 guide.

Servicing existing systems

Already have panels that aren’t performing, or an installer who’s no longer trading? We inspect, repair and re-certify systems installed by other firms. See solar panel servicing and maintenance.
