Goole has more big roofs per head than almost anywhere in the East Riding. Distribution sheds and factories line Capitol Park by junction 36 of the M62, the Port of Goole handles around 1.5 million tonnes of cargo a year, and Howden’s industrial estate sits by junction 37. Around them are farms and a ring of villages from Airmyn and Rawcliffe to Snaith. BrightEdge Solar designs and installs solar panels and battery storage for businesses, farms and homes in Goole, Howden and the surrounding area. We’re based in Beverley, about 27 miles away. Our nearest job is a barn roof at Ellerton, near Bubwith, about 13 miles from Goole, and we’ve installed commercial systems from Hessle to Rotherham.

Solar for warehouses, factories and port-side units

All-black solar panels on the white insulated roof of a manufacturing building in Rotherham

Capitol Park, the Goole 36 Enterprise Zone, is home to distribution, glass, chemicals and rail manufacturing, and East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Local Plan reserves its remaining land mainly for industry and storage. Ozone Business Park, on Howden’s established industrial estate by junction 37, adds more manufacturing and warehouse space. These buildings tend to have large, unshaded roofs and daytime loads: lighting, charging forklifts, compressors, conveyors and offices. That’s when solar generates.

What we look at on a Goole site:

  • Roof structure and sheeting. Profiled metal and insulated composite roofs are the norm. We check the structure, purlin spacing, rooflights and the age of the sheets before we design. At Pyronix in Rotherham we fitted 69.16 kWp with rail-free brackets made for a newly replaced insulated trapezoidal roof.
  • Shading and layout. On a part-shaded roof, panel-level optimisers stop one shaded section pulling down the rest. We used SolarEdge optimisers on the overlooked Rotherham roof.
  • Scale. On the industrial estate at Paull, east of Hull, we installed a 257 kWp rooftop array with 220 kW of inverter capacity and a Solis export power manager.
  • Owner or tenant. If you lease your unit, the landlord’s consent is needed, and a Power Purchase Agreement can suit a tenant who’d rather not own the panels.

Solar for farms around Goole and Howden

Farms around Goole, Howden and the Marshland villages have grain stores, machinery sheds and livestock buildings that suit rooftop panels. At Ellerton, near Bubwith, about 13 miles from Goole, we fitted a 19.8 kWp array of JA Solar 555 W panels to a barn’s trapezoidal roof. It runs through two 8 kW Solis single-phase inverters, and we fitted a new single-phase distribution board.

Where a shed faces the wrong way, a ground-mounted array in a field corner can work instead: at Wapplington near Pocklington, about 21 miles north, we installed a 29 kWp ground-mounted array on ballasted mounts, with no piling or concrete foundations.

Much of the land around Goole is low-lying. East Riding of Yorkshire Council has produced a separate Level 2 Strategic Flood Risk Assessment for Goole. A ground mount here needs the flood position checked at the start, both for planning and to keep inverters and cabling above likely water levels. Roof-mounted systems are usually simpler. Solar panels for Goole homes

We fit on-roof and in-roof systems, with or without a battery, for homes across Goole, Howden, Airmyn, Hook, Rawcliffe, Snaith and the DN14 villages. At North Newbald, 18 miles away, we fitted a 9 kWp in-roof system with an 11.5 kWh SolaX battery on a new-build home. In Hessle we fitted 11.83 kWp of all-black panels with a Tesla Powerwall across a slate roof and a flat roof.

Installing solar panels and batteries on a home currently carries 0% VAT, until 31 March 2027. See home solar panels and battery storage.

Clubs, schools and community buildings

Sports clubs and community buildings often have a single big roof and daytime use. For Hessle Sporting Club, 23 miles from Goole, we installed 21.6 kWp on the clubhouse roof, funded through the Football Association with payments released in stages. See solar panels for charities and community groups.

Planning: conservation areas and big sheds

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has designated conservation areas in Goole town centre, Howden, Airmyn, Rawcliffe and Snaith. Inside them, panels on a road-facing roof may need permission, and listed buildings need listed building consent. Rooftop panels on most industrial and commercial buildings are permitted development, subject to conditions. We check your site before we design.

Grid connection: Northern Powergrid and G99

Goole, Howden and the surrounding villages are on Northern Powergrid’s Yorkshire network. We confirm the network for your postcode.

  • Smaller systems (up to 16 A per phase, about 3.68 kW single-phase or 11.04 kW three-phase) usually connect under G98: we install, then notify the network.
  • Commercial and farm systems almost always need G99 approval before connection. We prepare and submit the application. It typically adds 8–12 weeks, so we start it early.
  • Busy industrial networks. Where export capacity is tight, Northern Powergrid may offer a limited export. We design around it with an export power manager, as at Paull, or a battery, so the array is sized for your site rather than for the grid.

Read our G99 application guide.

Funding and finance

  • Businesses and farms: solar panels are special-rate plant and machinery, so the Annual Investment Allowance can usually cover the cost against profits in the year you buy. Your accountant will confirm how this applies to you. On-site solar and batteries are also exempt from business rates in England until 31 March 2035.
  • Local support: Invest East Yorkshire, the council’s business support service, can tell you what local funding is open when you apply. We check what’s live for your postcode when we quote.
  • Homes: 0% VAT on installation until 31 March 2027. There’s no general government grant for home solar.
  • No upfront cost: a Power Purchase Agreement for larger sites, or solar finance.

More on funding: solar panel grants for businesses.

FAQs: solar panels in Goole and Howden

Yes. We’re based in Beverley, about 27 miles from Goole, and we cover Goole, Howden, Snaith, Rawcliffe and the DN14 villages. Our nearest install is a barn roof at Ellerton, near Bubwith, about 13 miles away, and we’ve also installed at North Newbald, Wapplington near Pocklington and Hessle.

Usually, with your landlord’s consent. Many leases need it for roof works. If you’d rather not own the panels, a Power Purchase Agreement lets you buy the power at an agreed rate instead. We can speak to your landlord with you.

Most modern profiled metal and composite roofs can take panels, but we check the structure, sheeting and fixings at survey. On older or fibre-cement roofs we may recommend a structural check or re-sheeting first.

Sometimes. Much of the land around Goole is low-lying, so we check the flood position and planning first, and keep inverters and cabling above likely water levels. A roof-mounted system is often the simpler option.

Northern Powergrid, on its Yorkshire network. Commercial systems need G99 approval before connection, which typically adds 8–12 weeks. We submit and manage the application for you.
