Driffield sits in the middle of some of the best arable land in the East Riding, and it shows in the buildings: grain stores, machinery sheds, livestock units and the food and engineering firms on the Kelleythorpe estate. Big roofs, daytime loads and, on many farms, a three-phase supply make the Wolds well suited to solar. BrightEdge Solar designs and installs solar panels and battery storage for farms, homes and businesses in Driffield and the surrounding villages. We’re based on Swinemoor Lane in Beverley, about 13 miles down the A164, and we’ve already installed on a farm at North Dalton, 7 miles from the town.

Solar for Wolds farms

Most of our Driffield-area enquiries come from farms, and the questions are usually the same: will the roof take it, what will the network let us export, and is a battery worth it?
  • Asbestos and fibre-cement roofs. Many older stores and sheds round Driffield are clad in asbestos-cement sheeting. We check its condition first. Where it’s sound we use fixings and lightweight panels suited to the sheet. Where it isn’t, re-cladding and solar can be done as one job. At North Dalton we fitted 19.8 kWp to a split corrugated and asbestos farm roof, with a 22 kW charger so holiday-let guests can use the surplus.
  • Grain drying, workshops and livestock. Fans, dryers, workshop kit, lighting and ventilation all draw power in daylight. Solar used on the farm is worth far more than solar exported.
  • Ground mounts. If the sheds face the wrong way or are shaded, a field corner can carry a ballasted ground-mounted array with no piling. We’ve done this at Wapplington near Pocklington.
  • Farm diversification. Holiday lets, farm shops and yards can be fed from the same system, with power trenched to nearby buildings.

Solar for Driffield businesses

Driffield’s employment land is concentrated on and around the Kelleythorpe Industrial Estate on the western edge of town, where East Riding of Yorkshire Council has allocated further land for industry and storage. Food processors, agricultural merchants, engineers and distribution firms here typically run equipment through the working day, which is when solar generates. We size systems from your half-hourly data, so you aren’t paying for panels whose output you’d only export.
  • Rooftop PV on profiled metal, composite and fibre-cement roofs
  • Commercial battery storage to carry midday surplus into early starts or late shifts (battery storage)
  • EV charging for staff and fleet vehicles
For larger sites across the county see commercial solar in East Yorkshire.

Solar panels for Driffield homes

We fit on-roof and in-roof systems, with or without batteries, for homes in Driffield and the YO25 villages. In-roof panels sit flush with the tiles, which suits new builds and homes where looks matter. If you’re in one of Driffield’s conservation areas (the town has both a North and a South conservation area), we’ll check whether panels on a roof facing the street need planning permission before we design anything. See home solar panels and battery storage. Installing solar panels and batteries on a home currently carries 0% VAT, until 31 March 2027.

Grid connection: Northern Powergrid and G99

Driffield and the surrounding Wolds are on Northern Powergrid’s Yorkshire network.
  • Smaller systems (up to 16 A per phase, about 3.68 kW single-phase or 11.04 kW three-phase) usually connect under G98: we install, then notify the network.
  • Most farm and business systems are larger and need G99 approval before connection. We prepare and submit the application and deal with any questions. It typically adds 8–12 weeks, so we start early.
  • Rural lines out on the Wolds can be long and lightly loaded. If Northern Powergrid limits your export, we design around it with export limitation, a battery, or both, so you still use what you generate.
Read our G99 application guide.

Funding and finance

  • Farms and businesses: solar panels are special-rate plant and machinery, so the Annual Investment Allowance can usually cover the cost against profits in the year you buy. Your accountant will confirm how it applies to you. On-site solar and batteries are also exempt from business rates in England until 31 March 2035.
  • Local support: Invest East Yorkshire, the council’s business support service, and the HEY Growth Hub list what business funding is open at any time. Rural funding rounds have included carbon-reduction projects in the past, so we check what’s live for your postcode when we quote.
  • Homes: 0% VAT on installation until 31 March 2027. There’s no general government grant for home solar.
  • No upfront cost: for larger sites, a Power Purchase Agreement or solar finance.

FAQs: solar panels in Driffield

Yes. We’re based in Beverley, about 13 miles away, and we cover Driffield, the YO25 villages and the wider Wolds. Our nearest farm install is at North Dalton, about 7 miles from the town.

Often, yes, if the sheeting is in sound condition. We inspect it first and use fixings and lightweight panels suited to the sheet. If the roof is past its best, re-cladding and installing solar at the same time is usually the better option.

Northern Powergrid, on its Yorkshire network. Larger systems need G99 approval before connection, which typically adds 8–12 weeks. We submit and manage the application for you.

It depends on when you use power. A battery stores midday surplus for the evening or early morning instead of exporting it at a low rate, and it can help where export is limited. We model it from your bills or half-hourly data and will tell you if it doesn’t pay.

Many roof-mounted systems on homes, farms and business buildings are permitted development, subject to conditions. Ground-mounted arrays, listed buildings and street-facing roofs in Driffield’s conservation areas can need permission. We check for your site before designing.
