FAQ

Commonly Asked Questions

Yes. We’re based in Beverley and cover Hull and the whole of East Yorkshire, as well as installing nationwide.

Typically about £17,000–£21,000 for 30 kWp, £28,000–£37,000 for 50 kWp and £50,000–£65,000 for 100 kWp, excluding VAT. Book a free survey for an accurate quote.

Payback depends on how much of the power you use on site, your electricity price and your roof, so we work it out from your bills or half-hourly data in every proposal.

Northern Powergrid. We handle the G99 application with them, which typically adds 8–12 weeks before installation.

Yes, with the landlord’s consent. We provide the information landlords usually need, and a PPA can suit leased buildings.

Many rooftop systems on commercial buildings fall under permitted development, subject to conditions and size limits. We’ll check for your site and apply if it’s needed.

A 50–150 kWp roof typically takes about 1–2 weeks on site, after G99 approval.

Funding changes often, so we check what’s open when we quote. The Hull and East Yorkshire Growth Hub signposts current business support. We run the grant application with you and do the legwork: technical details, quotes, generation forecasts and paperwork. Solar bought outright may also qualify for capital allowances; check with your accountant.

Yes. We don’t fix panels straight onto asbestos: we overclad it with new profiled sheeting and fit the solar on top, as one job. Modern fibre-cement roofs can usually take panels directly after a roof survey, and we’ve installed on one in Penzance.
Yes. We plan the work around your operations. On a 300 kWp estate in Peterborough the units stayed occupied throughout, and we’ve also installed across multi-unit estates in Middlewich and Oldham.

Usually, yes. Many existing commercial systems can take a battery, either AC-coupled with its own battery inverter or by replacing an ageing inverter with a hybrid. We check your current inverter, wiring, metering and G99 position first, because adding storage may need a notification to, or a new application with, the DNO. We do this for systems installed by other firms too. As a real example, a 42 kWh battery with a 20 kW hybrid inverter added to an existing system came to about £16,000.

We monitor it for the first two months and offer annual maintenance to MCS MIS3002. Every install carries a 24-month workmanship warranty. We also fix and re-certify systems installed by other firms.

Yes, subject to a roof survey. Most units on Hull’s estates have profiled-metal roofs that suit rail-free fixings. If you lease, we’ll give your landlord the details they usually ask for, such as the roof loading, fixing method and insurance.

Yes. We work to your site inductions, RAMS and permits to work. We’re CHAS Elite accredited, which many main contractors and site operators ask for.

We design the fixings and layout for the site’s exposure to wind and salt air, and we check the roof structure and condition first.

Yes. Solar covers daytime demand, and a battery stores the midday surplus to run into the evening or to cover peaks. We size both from your half-hourly data.

Commercial solar across Hull’s estates, docks and the East Riding

Hull’s commercial roofs sit in a few clear clusters, and each has its own practical points.
  • North Hull, Sutton Fields and Kingswood (HU7, HU8). Large-span industrial and distribution units with profiled-metal roofs and three-phase supplies. Rooftop solar usually suits these well. We check the roof sheets, rooflights and fixings first.
  • East Hull, Hedon Road, Marfleet and the docks (HU8, HU9, HU12). Port-side warehouses, food and engineering sites around Alexandra Dock and King George Dock, and process sites out towards Saltend. On permitted sites we work to your inductions, RAMS and permits to work.
  • Stoneferry and the River Hull corridor (HU8, HU2). Older brick and steel-framed works alongside newer units. Mixed roofs often mean a structural check and a split design across roof types.
  • West Hull and the Humber bank: Priory Park, Bridgehead in Hessle, and Melton (HU4, HU13, HU14). Business parks with many leased units. Solar needs landlord consent, and a Power Purchase Agreement can suit occupiers who don’t own the roof.
Grid connection. The whole of Hull and the East Riding is on Northern Powergrid’s Yorkshire network. Larger systems need G99 approval before installation, and we make that application for you. Where the local network limits export, we design around it with export limitation or a battery. Sectors we see most: logistics and warehousing, food processing and cold storage, engineering and fabrication, caravan and holiday-home manufacturing, the offshore wind supply chain, motor trade and workshops, and farms. All of them use most of their power in daylight hours, which is when solar generates. Postcodes covered: HU1–HU20, plus YO15, YO16 and YO25 (Bridlington and Driffield) and DN14 (Goole). Our base is BrightEdge Solar Ltd, Colonial House, Swinemoor Lane, Beverley HU17 0LS, just north of Hull. We’re CHAS Elite accredited, MCS certified (NIC-601602) and a RECC member.

What we install

  • Rooftop solar PV on profiled metal, fibre cement, flat/membrane and pitched roofs. See our warehouse and industrial solar page for roof types and the checks we make. For projects outside East Yorkshire, see commercial solar PV across the UK.
  • Commercial battery storage to store midday surplus, work around export limits and cover demand peaks.
  • Agricultural and farm solar for barns, sheds and ground-mounted arrays.
  • EV charging fed by solar and storage for vans and company cars.
  • Maintenance and remedial work, including on systems installed by other firms: inspection, fixing and re-certifying non-compliant systems, and ongoing maintenance.

Grid connection (G99) in East Yorkshire

Commercial systems almost always need G99 approval from the Distribution Network Operator before installation. Across Hull and East Yorkshire that’s Northern Powergrid. We prepare and submit the application, including the technical details and diagrams the DNO needs, and deal with any queries. The approval typically adds 8–12 weeks before installation, so we start it early. For the full process, see our G99 application guide. If the DNO limits how much you can export, we design around it with export limitation, a battery, or both.

Typical costs

Indicative installed costs for commercial solar PV, by system size (ex VAT):
  • 30 kWp: about £17,000–£21,000
  • 50 kWp: about £28,000–£37,000
  • 100 kWp: about £50,000–£65,000
  • 150 kWp and above: about £420–£650 per kWp
Commercial battery storage typically costs about £350–£450 per kWh installed, including the hybrid inverter. As a real example, a 42 kWh battery with a 20 kW hybrid inverter added to an existing system came to about £16,000. Prices exclude VAT, which is charged at 20% on commercial installs. Simple roofs with good access sit at the lower end; fibre-cement roofs, premium panels, scaffolding and safety systems push the price up. Every quote sets out equipment, installation, scaffolding and DNO costs, so you can compare like for like. We base every design on your actual consumption, not the biggest array the roof will hold.

Grants, tax and paying for commercial solar in Hull

Local grants. Funding for business energy projects changes often, so we check what’s open when we quote. For businesses, the Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Growth Hub signposts current support. We run the grant application with you and do the legwork: technical details, quotes, generation forecasts and paperwork. Tax. Solar panels and batteries bought outright may qualify for capital allowances. Check with your accountant how this applies to your business. Paying for it. Buying outright gives the best long-term return if you have capital available. Business finance or leasing spreads the cost (see solar finance). A Power Purchase Agreement needs little or no upfront cost: you buy the power generated on your roof at an agreed rate over a term of 5–25 years, which can suit leased units on estates such as Sutton Fields or Priory Park. Payback. Payback depends on how much of the solar power you use on site, what you pay per unit, and your roof. Instead of quoting a headline figure, we work it out from your bills, or ideally half-hourly data, in every proposal.
