Commercial solar PV and battery storage for East Lancashire

Commercial Solar Panels for Lancashire Factories and Industrial Units

East Lancashire still makes things. From Blackburn and Darwen up the M65 to Burnley, Nelson and Colne, and out to the Ribble Valley, plenty of factories, mills and trade units are run by the people who own them. BrightEdge Solar designs and installs rooftop solar PV and battery storage for manufacturers, engineering firms and industrial units across Lancashire. We’re based in Beverley, East Yorkshire, and install across the UK, including a 99 kWp warehouse roof in Oldham on the same North West network.

Why Lancashire manufacturers are looking at solar

We base the system size on your actual consumption, not the biggest array the roof will hold.

How a project runs

From first call to aftercare

How a project runs
From first call to aftercare
Initial call and desktop design

Initial call: we look at your bills and, ideally, half-hourly data. Desktop design: satellite imagery and mapping give us an initial layout and estimate, often before we visit.

Site survey and proposal

Site survey: roof, structure, electrical supply, existing G99 approvals and access. Proposal: final design, expected generation, costs and timescale.

G99 application and installation

G99 application: we submit and track it, along with any planning application. Installation and commissioning: MCS-compliant, planned around your busy periods.

Monitoring and aftercare

Remote monitoring, plus optional annual maintenance to MCS MIS3002.

Where we install commercial solar in Lancashire

See our recent projects

Old mill and northlight roofs

Stone and slate mills, northlight sheds and multi-bay portal frames. South-facing slopes can often take panels. Older fibre-cement sheets may contain asbestos, so we assess the roof first and talk you through the options, including over-cladding.

Modern units on the M65 estates

Profiled-metal units, workshops and trade units with rooflights. We use Renusol MetaSole+, which fixes straight to the sheet profile without going into the purlins, or Clenergy rail, and we protect rooflights while we’re on the roof. See warehouse and industrial solar for roof types and the checks we make.

Maintenance and remedial work

Including on systems installed by other firms: inspection, fixing and re-certifying non-compliant systems, and ongoing maintenance.

FAQ

Commonly Asked Questions

Yes. We cover Blackburn, Burnley, Pendle, Hyndburn, Rossendale, the Ribble Valley and the rest of Lancashire from our base in Beverley, and we’ve installed 99 kWp on a warehouse roof in Oldham on the same North West network.

SP Electricity North West, formerly Electricity North West. We handle the G99 application with them, which typically adds 8–12 weeks before installation.

Yes. You don’t need a landlord’s consent, and solar bought outright may qualify for capital allowances, so check with your accountant. If you lease your unit, you’ll need the landlord’s consent, and a PPA can suit leased buildings.

Often, yes. South-facing slopes on northlight and multi-bay roofs can usually take panels, subject to the structure, the condition of the sheeting and any listing or conservation-area controls. We check all of this at survey.

Typically about £17,000–£21,000 for 30 kWp, £28,000–£37,000 for 50 kWp and £50,000–£65,000 for 100 kWp, excluding VAT. Systems of 150 kWp and above are typically about £420–£650 per kWp. Book a free survey for an accurate quote.

A 50–150 kWp roof typically takes about 1–2 weeks on site, after G99 approval. You’ll only lose power briefly for the final connection, and we can schedule that out of hours.

Areas we cover in Lancashire

We work with businesses across:

  • Blackburn and Darwen: factories, workshops and trade units in both towns
  • Hyndburn: Accrington, Great Harwood and Clayton-le-Moors
  • Burnley and Padiham
  • Pendle: Nelson, Colne and Barnoldswick
  • Rossendale: Rawtenstall, Haslingden and Bacup
  • Ribble Valley: Clitheroe, Whalley, Longridge and the surrounding farms and rural businesses
  • Central and West Lancashire: Preston, Chorley and Leyland
  • Greater Manchester: we’ve installed 99 kWp on a warehouse roof in Oldham, and we take on larger commercial projects across the UK

These are areas we cover, not a list of past installs. Closer to home, see commercial solar in Hull and East Yorkshire. We also cover commercial solar in Greater Manchester and commercial solar in Cumbria.

What we install

  • Rooftop solar PV on profiled metal, composite, fibre-cement, flat and pitched roofs. See commercial solar PV.
  • SolarEdge systems with optimisers where you want panel-level monitoring and safety, as well as Solis, Fox ESS and Sigenergy inverters.
  • Commercial battery storage for early shifts, evening loads or an export limit. See commercial battery storage.
  • MID metering with remote reading, so generation is recorded accurately.
  • Workplace and fleet EV charging fed by solar and storage.
  • Remedial work on existing systems: inspecting, fixing and re-certifying systems installed by other firms.

Grid connection (G99) in Lancashire

Lancashire’s local network is run by SP Electricity North West (formerly Electricity North West). Almost every commercial system needs G99 approval before installation. We prepare and submit the application with the technical details and single-line diagrams the DNO needs, and deal with any queries. Approval typically adds 8–12 weeks before installation, so we start it early.

Already have G99 approval for an older system? Tell us at the start. On a site in Doncaster we sized a new SolarEdge inverter to fit an existing approval granted for an older 60 kW unit. If the DNO limits your export, a G100 export limitation scheme or a battery means you still use everything you generate on site. Read more: G99 applications explained.

Planning in Lancashire

Many rooftop systems on commercial buildings fall under permitted development, subject to conditions and size limits. In East Lancashire, a few local factors can change that:

  • Forest of Bowland National Landscape, which covers parts of the Ribble Valley and Pendle, and other protected land where extra conditions can apply.
  • Mill conservation areas, such as Burnley’s Weavers’ Triangle and canal-side mill areas along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.
  • Listed mill buildings, where listed building consent is needed.

We’ll check for your site and apply if it’s needed.

Installing on a working site

  • Site inductions, RAMS and permits to suit your own health and safety rules.
  • Scaffolding and edge protection planned around loading bays, yards and walkways.
  • Temporary covers over rooflights during the install, and a permanent Man-Safe lifeline if you want one.
  • Only a brief shutdown for the final connection, which we can schedule out of hours.
  • A 50–150 kWp roof typically takes about 1–2 weeks on site, after G99 approval.

Typical costs

Indicative installed costs for commercial solar PV, by system size (ex VAT):

  • 30 kWp: about £17,000–£21,000
  • 50 kWp: about £28,000–£37,000
  • 100 kWp: about £50,000–£65,000
  • 150 kWp and above: about £420–£650 per kWp

Commercial battery storage typically costs about £350–£450 per kWh installed, including the hybrid inverter. As a real example, a 42 kWh battery with a 20 kW hybrid inverter added to an existing system came to about £16,000.

Prices exclude VAT, which is charged at 20% on commercial installs. Simple roofs with good access sit at the lower end. Fibre-cement roofs, premium panels, scaffolding and safety systems such as rooflight protection or Man-Safe lifelines push the price up. Every quote sets out equipment, installation, scaffolding and DNO costs separately, so you can compare like for like.

Paying for it

  • Outright purchase: the best long-term return for businesses with capital available. Solar panels and batteries may qualify for capital allowances, so ask your accountant.
  • Business finance or leasing: spreads the cost. See solar finance.
  • Power Purchase Agreement (PPA): little or no upfront cost. You buy the power generated on your roof at an agreed rate, which can suit leased buildings. See PPAs.
